Edmonds Speech & Debate

2006-2007

Our third year was our best ever!  Our team grew, more students won more awards, we placed at State and went to Nationals!  Even more exciting were the personal milestones that team members reached.

Ian Laster competed in both International Extemp and Extemp Commentary at Wichita Nationals.  We brought seven entries to the State Speech Tournament.  Kate Laster and Kelsey F. competed in Expository Speaking.  Elliot Saba and Kate Laster competed in Humorous Interpretation.  Ian Laster competed in Extemporaneous and Impromptu Speaking.  William G. & Jonathan Lewis competed in Duo Interpretation. Ian earned third place at State in 3A Impromptu Speaking.  In addition, Ian was the District One 3A Extemp Champ and earned third in District One 3A Impromptu.  Kate was the District One 3A Expository Champ and earned third in District One 3A Humorous Interp.

This year 17 students attended 13 tournaments; 10 students earned 27 awards and trophies at 11 of those tournaments. In addition to the team members named above, Henry A., Michelle H., Amanda Lewis, and Erika Saba earned awards.

We held our first Spring Speech Showcase this year for an audience of about 50 people.  They were treated to Michelle’s expository speech on Pez, an oratory by Ali, an impromptu speech by Ian, “Me Talk Pretty One Day” by Elliot, “Sleeping Ugly” by Marian, “What’s Wrong With This Picture?” by William and Jonathan and “Shadow Spinner” by Erika Saba.  Kelsey and Henry were our MCs.

Instead of presenting team debates for an audience this spring, the team ran several sessions of student congress, opening participation to all interested EHRC students.
