Edmonds Speech & Debate

Our second season started, once again,  in Mukilteo with the Kamiak High School Novice Tournament in October and ended, once again, at the State Speech Championships in March. This year, Emily M. competed at State in Interpretive Reading and Ian Laster competed in Extemporaneous Speaking.  Ian was the District One 3A Extemp Champion!   During the year, 15 students competed at 18 tournaments in Gig Harbor , Mukilteo, Mt. Vernon and Tacoma at the University of Puget Sound , Puyallup , Oak Harbor, Snohomish and Burlington .

The team received 18 individual event awards at 7 of the 18 tournaments. These awards went to Henry A., Ian Laster, Kate Laster, Emily M., Elliot S., and Kelsey Ferguson.

Thanks to the staff, parents, community supporters and students for an outstanding season. Our competition comes from schools such as Auburn Riverside, Gonzaga Prep, Mercer Island , Gig Harbor , Rogers , Kentwood , The Lakeside School and other national level programs. We compete against the best in the nation!  

The team also presented several pieces at the EHRC Arts Gala this year.  The presentations provided the EHRC community an opportunity to see what it is that the Forensics Team does.  Thanks to Kelsey Ferguson, Henry A., Ian Laster, Elliot S., Marian Lewis and Kate Laster for sharing their talents with the rest of the school!  Thanks as well to Kate and Marian for performing at the June Project Fair.

Our "Debate Thursdays in May"  were a successful experiment.  Three topics were debated over as many weeks.  Several students participated...many of whom had neither debated nor been on the team before!  Thanks to  Emily B., Kelsey Ferguson, Ian and Kate Laster, Billy Leahy,  Erika and Elliot S., Alex S., Christian S., Alex Stewart and Joshua W. for discussing the finer points of cell phone bans, dress codes and internet file sharing.

Edmonds HRC has a rapidly growing program in speech and debate due to our fabulous students!  Congratulations!
